About Ann Self
The best career advice Ann Self ever heard was “only paint what excites you,” and she has done just that, painting the wild places and wildlife she loves.
From an early age, living in many places across the United States and in Europe, she painted and drew whenever she could, taking advantage of the art instruction offered by her schools. After studying art at the University of Houston, she worked several years as a commercial artist. In recent years she has continued to hone her talent by taking workshops from such well known artists as Dave Wade, Curt Walters, William Scott Jennings, Matt Smith and Morgan Samuel Price.
Ann travels extensively to many wild and beautiful places with her husband, Mike Lowen. For many years she worked in colored pencils, which are easy to pack. Then, in 1998, wanting to achieve richer colors and textures, she switched to oils, bought a small pochade box for plein-air work and travel, and has never looked back.
“I’ve traveled much of the world,” says Ann, “and have found that each place has its own beauty. If I could send a message with my art, it would be that beauty can be found wherever you are. This endlessly varied beauty never ceases to excite me, and I strive to convey it in my art.”
Ann has participated in national juried exhibitions and competitions throughout the United States, and has been featured in International Artist Magazine and Wildlife Art Magazine. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, Society of Animal Artists, Laguna Plein Air Painters of America, and American Women Artists. Her paintings hang in private and corporate collections across the country. She is represented by Di Tommaso Galleries in Jackson, WY.
